INSTALLING EXCHANGE 2003 SP 1 ON SBS 2003

Exchange 2003 SP1 is SUPPORTED on SBS 2003

Expand the Exchange 2003 Service pack

Read about the changes here included in Exchange 2003 SP1

Download it and "unpack" it....

Since this is not via cdrom... don't use this install screen.....

As it will give you this error ---

Instead the install file called update.exe can be found under the \setup\i386 directory

click update.exe and it will begin the install

The install will begin

Agree to the EULA

Click next

If the GZIP patch is not installed you will get this error

Click OK

831464 - FIX: IIS 6.0 compression corruption causes access violations:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831464

Go grab that patch and download it

Finish the install of 831464

Now retry the install of Exchange sp1, Start over with the installation

Click next

The install will begin

When the wizard is finished it will prompt you to reboot

Please note - I already had the GZIP patch [831464] previously installed on my "main machine" and NNTP service was installed and in "manual" mode, but I just tried it on a VMware "bog" standard install SBS and did not need NNTP running but did need the 831464 patch as indicated above.

And when complete, and clicking on the "Servers" you see that it now indicates SP1 has been installed.

"I actually found out some more information about the Exchange SP1 store.exe memory issue. It seems that in SP1 the Exchange team changed how store.exe reports memory usage. More details excerpted here:
Prior to Sp1, the database cache bytes are counted as mapped bytes.  In Sp1, the database cache is counted under private bytes  This changed because of the Jet NT code-base merge.  Thus, the private bytes will be considerably higher (about 940 MB higher) for Ti SP1 than Ti, Pt etc, and mapped bytes will be correspondingly lower."

In SBSland we will get the following notification

The store.exe process is allocating more memory than usual.Check to see if you are having problems with e-mail. If so, stop and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. You can disable this alert or change its threshold by using the Change Alert Notifications task in the Server Management Monitoring and Reporting taskpad.

Based on the note above... we're guessing add 1,000 to it?

Select Performance Counters

Due to the fact that my STORE is very small, I will not adjust the threshold, but if you need to, add 1,000 to this counter

If you can't install because of an issue with Search

If you are getting Dependency Manager: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** :
CDependencyManager::ValidateDependencyStates() : The dependency of
Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services on Microsoft
Search is not satisfied.

Look under this key "HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Search\Install"
and if all you have is [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Search\Install]
"InstallPath"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\System\\MSSearch"

Then add the following :

Major Version: REG_DWORD: 0x9
Minor Version: REG_DWORD: 0x6b
Version: REG_SZ: 9.107.5512
